MERMAID – Aquaculture & Fixed Offshore wind : This combination is derived from the work performed on the Mermaid project. This project examined the feasibility of installing aquaculture installations such as mussel farms in the same space as fixed offshore wind farms. Offshore wind farms will be developed in the area off the coast of Belgium and the Netherlands. Research has shown that the area has potential for mussel seed collection and mussel aquaculture. So far, mixed use of space (MUS) is however not considered. Potential advantages include an increased attractiveness for licencing applications due to a more efficient use of space as well as cost savings using common vessels.
